Who we are

MENA Film Festival is located in the unceded, ancestral, and occupied traditional lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in Vancouver. It is one of the city's renowned community film festivals, bringing films from MENA/SWANA artists and directors to Vancouver, Canada, and the world.

What we are looking for

As MENA moves into its successful fourth year, connecting international film professionals and partners from the MENA/SWANA diaspora with the local arts community by programming films, talks, and panels, we seek engaged and active leaders and cultural connectors to be our new board members.

Who you are

A professional in various fields (art, film, technology, not-for-profit, finance, legal, marketing etc.) who is interested in films, arts, and culture. Previous experience serving on a board is a plus. You are knowledgeable in one or more of the following: non-profit organization governance, fundraising, event planning, legal advising, digital strategy, or marketing. Finally, a board member who supports our vision and mission.

Tasks and goals

Board Members govern and guide the Organization while supporting the Executive Director and Strategy Director in managing the Organization. They oversee the Organization's financial health, programs and overall performance. Board members are required to attend regular meetings as needed (2-3 per month) and serve on committees. Able to commit 6 to 8 hours per month to the Organization and expected to hold their position until the 2024 AGM. Adhere to policies serving on the board, as you may not receive financial compensation or submit your films to the festival.

Summary of roles and responsibilities

As a board member, you will attend regular meetings as needed (2-3 per month) and serve on committees. Board members are voting members with full authority and responsibility to:

  • Contribute to defining the Organization's strategic directions and approve of its strategic plan;
  • Represent MENA Film Festival's mission and vision in the community;
  • Approve the Organization's yearly budget and oversee its transactions;
  • Support the Organization by getting more partnerships, sponsorships, and grants;
  • Support the Organization through attendance at MENA film festival's programming and events;
  • Approve Organization's policies, such as anti-harassment and diversity and inclusion;
  • Come to board meetings well-prepared and well-informed about issues on the agenda;
  • Participate in the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and other board and committees meetings;
  • Build a collaborative working relationship with fellow Board Directors that contributes to consensus;
  • Become knowledgeable about MENA Film Festival's role in the film and arts community and familiarize yourself with their partners and collaborators;
  • Maintain sensitivity to the social, political, and cultural factors affecting the Organization;
  • Become knowledgeable about Board governance, including policy, finance, programs, human resources, fundraising, and community relations;
  • Assume board leadership roles when asked or necessary;
  • Elect the Board Executive Officers as needed;
  • Review Board and self-reflect on own performance periodically;
  • Review the bylaws, and recommend bylaw changes to the membership;
  • Be available to serve the required term of office of a minimum of two years
  • They may play a consultative role in the Organization's HR operation and conflict resolution.
  • Help with programming films or events such as panels and talks is an option if that fits within the member's interests.
